The San Diego Chapter of Women in Aviation International (WAI) held their annual Girls in Aviation Day event for local girls ages 8 to 16, introducing them to some of the many possibilities available in a career in aviation. The event took place at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar as part of their annual Air Show on Friday afternoon, September 23, 2016. Our winning girls were selected through an essay contest to participate in this special event, which included an exclusive “meet and greet” with the Blue Angels pilots and the chance to see one of the F/A-18 Hornet jets up close.

“Our organization is dedicated to showing girls that there are exciting careers available to them as engineers, pilots, aircraft dispatchers, air traffic controllers, airport managers, astronauts and many other jobs within the aviation and aerospace communities,” says WAI San Diego Chapter President Jill Meyers. “We introduced the girls to role models including the Blue Angels’ first female pilot, U.S. Marine Corps Capt Katie Higgins, who flies the C-130 Hercules aircraft ‘Fat Albert’. The girls ended up spending over 30 minutes with Capt Higgins before the Blue Angels photographer took the official photo with the team and Jet #1! We are so excited that our girls had this ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to meet the Blue Angels and learn more about career opportunities in aviation.”

The San Diego Chapter was one of 70 WAI chapters around the world hosting Girls in Aviation Day events that weekend to inspire the next generation of women in aviation. Chapters all over the world put on their own unique programs, and many U.S. states officially proclaimed September 24, 2016 to be Girls in Aviation Day in their state!
